GIS and Cartographic Design Analyst

About the role

The GIS and Cartographic Design Analyst will provide on‑demand mapping support for COAR’s analytical briefs, situational reports and monitoring products. Working within the Information Management team, the analyst will turn raw spatial data into clean, publication‑ready vector maps for humanitarian and development contexts.

Key responsibilities

• Create thematic vector maps (PDF, SVG, PNG, AI) for regular updates, briefings and research reports using QGIS or ArcGIS.
• Process raw GIS data (Excel/CSV coordinates, field surveys, open‑source conflict logs) into GIS‑ready layers and maintain a version‑controlled spatial repository for Haiti and other programmes.
• Refine map aesthetics and labeling in Adobe Illustrator to ensure clear visual hierarchy, correct projections and proper legend design.
• Collaborate with the Graphic Design Unit to integrate maps into final report layouts following standardized graphic guidelines.

Required profile

• University degree in GIS, Geography, Cartography, Information Management, Graphic Design or a related field.
• Minimum 2 years of professional experience in GIS mapping, spatial data handling or cartographic design within an INGO, UN agency, social enterprise or research institute.
• Fluency in English and French; knowledge of Haitian Creole is an asset.
• Ability to handle urgent requests and work flexible hours, including occasional outside‑office times.

Required skills

• Proficiency in QGIS and/or ArcGIS for vector layer management and map production.
• Experience with Adobe Illustrator (or similar vector design software) for cartographic polishing.
• Hands‑on knowledge of spatial data formats such as Shapefile, GeoJSON, KML and tabular data (CSV, Excel) from KoboToolbox or ODK.
• Understanding of cartographic fundamentals: map projections, scale bars, legend design, color theory and typographic hierarchy.
