Political Affairs Officer

About the role

The United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) seeks a Political Affairs Officer to support its mandate of promoting political stability, good governance, and human rights. Based in Port‑au‑Prince, the incumbent will report to the Senior Political Affairs Officer and work under the supervision of the Principal Political/Good Governance Officer.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in formulating political strategies and developing action plans to address short‑ and long‑term political challenges.
• Produce analysis on thematic issues such as economic development, elections, and security, highlighting links between political, economic, and business sectors.
• Build and maintain relationships with political leaders, civil‑society actors, and other stakeholders to support the mission’s strategic goals.
• Integrate a rights‑based, conflict‑prevention, and gender‑sensitive approach into policy and operational activities.
• Prepare briefing notes, talking points, speeches, and provide advice to senior staff on political, social, and economic matters.
• Lead, coach, and evaluate a work team; participate in recruitment, training, and performance management.
• Develop the political team’s work programme, budget, and medium‑term plan, and contribute to administrative decisions.

Required profile

• In‑depth knowledge of United Nations operations, peacebuilding, post‑conflict stabilization, and good governance.
• Proven ability to analyse political developments and recommend strategic actions.
• Experience in stakeholder engagement and partnership building in complex environments.
• Strong written communication skills for drafting high‑quality analytical products.
• Leadership experience, including team management and staff development.

Required skills
