Job description

About the role

The British Embassy in Port-au-Prince is looking for a Political Officer to join a small, high-performing team. Working closely with the British Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission, the officer delivers the Embassy's political engagement, reporting and programme objectives in Haiti. The role is split between political reporting, programme and project management, and leading the Chevening Scholarship programme.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a network of contacts across government, political parties, civil society, the private sector, media and international organisations.
  • Analyse political, economic and social developments in Haiti and provide reporting, briefings and advice to senior Embassy staff.
  • Support the Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission, represent the Embassy at meetings and events, and support official visits.
  • Identify and deliver projects on democracy, human rights, security, migration and economic development, and help prepare project proposals and funding bids.
  • Manage ad-hoc programme funding and monitor, evaluate and report on programme delivery.
  • Lead the Chevening Scholarship programme in Haiti, including outreach to universities and engagement with alumni.

Required profile

  • Complete fluency in written and spoken English, French and Creole, assessed during recruitment.
  • Legal right to live and work in Haiti at the time of application; security clearance and reference checks are required.
  • Strong interest in politics, public policy and international affairs, with knowledge of Haiti's political landscape.
  • Desirable: knowledge of the UK and UK foreign policy, programme or project management experience, and experience with government, civil society or diplomatic stakeholders.

Required skills

  • Excellent communication, analytical and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and represent the Embassy externally.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

What we offer

  • Permanent position with 39 hours per week, starting 4 January 2026.
  • Private health insurance and a benefits package including generous leave and flexible working where possible.
  • 16 working days annual leave, increasing with length of service, plus Haitian and some UK public holidays.
  • Training and professional development opportunities.
