Human Rights Officer

About the role

The Human Rights Officer will work within the United Nations Support Office for Haiti (UNSOH) in the Human Rights Due Diligence Policy Unit. Reporting to the Head of the HRDDP Unit, the incumbent will lead assigned human‑rights activities and ensure the implementation of UNSOH’s mandate in Haiti.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct substantive research and analysis of human‑rights issues, assessing their impact on the situation in Haiti.
• Collect and analyse gender‑specific human‑rights data and indicators.
• Integrate human‑rights and gender‑equality considerations into political, humanitarian and economic programmes.
• Define work plans and support the drafting of risk assessments and mitigation measures.
• Carry out field verification visits, follow‑up on cases and represent the unit in meetings.
• Support capacity‑building efforts, draft reports, briefings and other decision‑making documents.
• Train and supervise junior staff members.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field (or equivalent combination of degree and experience).
• Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in human‑rights, political affairs or related areas, including at least two years in a UN field operation or similar international organisation in a conflict setting.
• Demonstrated experience working with communities on human‑rights promotion and protection, and engaging with security forces for civilian protection.
• Fluency in French and Haitian Creole (UN Level III); English at a functional level is desirable.
