Medical Officer – Public Health & HIV/AIDS

About the role

The Medical Officer will provide clinical and occupational‑health services to United Nations personnel in Port‑au‑Prince and lead public‑health, health‑promotion and HIV‑related programmes. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the incumbent will also support outbreak surveillance, response and HIV post‑exposure prophylaxis activities.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver day‑to‑day clinical care, emergency response, preventive travel‑health services and maintain confidential medical records.
• Maintain disease‑surveillance systems, analyse health data, issue alerts and coordinate outbreak investigations with mission and external partners.
• Design and implement health‑promotion and HIV/AIDS programmes, including peer‑education, confidential counselling, testing and anti‑stigma initiatives.
• Manage the mission HIV Post‑Exposure Prophylaxis programme, ensuring readiness, inventory control and timely follow‑up after exposures.
• Handle medical administration tasks such as clearances, sick‑leave processing, procurement, budgeting, liaison with host‑country facilities and deputise for senior officers when required.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s) in public health and a valid unrestricted medical licence (MD, MBBS, etc.).
• Minimum five years of progressive experience in clinical medicine and public health, including outbreak management and health‑promotion programmes.
• Experience with electronic medical‑record and health‑information systems, epidemiological data analysis and UN or international field operations is desirable.
• Fluency in English (required); French and Spanish are desirable.
