Occupational Safety Officer

About the role

The Occupational Safety Officer is based in the Medical Services Section of the United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH). Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the incumbent will implement the UN Occupational Safety and Health Management System across all UNSOH operations, ensuring a safe working environment for staff and partners.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and apply methods, tools and information sources for identifying, assessing and mitigating occupational hazards.
• Support planning teams in conducting safety risk assessments and preparing risk‑management plans, including hazard identification and activity safety plans.
• Record and analyse incident data, participate in investigations, and track root‑cause corrective actions.
• Monitor occupational safety performance against UN indicators and provide evidence‑based reports to management.
• Develop practical, cost‑effective controls and update safety standards, procedures and checklists.
• Plan and conduct workplace inspections, safety audits and programme evaluations across all UNSOH locations.

Required profile

• Professional knowledge of occupational safety and health principles, policies and risk‑control methodologies.
• Ability to analyse incident and inspection data, develop proportionate controls and provide technical advice in a complex field environment.
• Strong planning and organizing skills: set clear goals, prioritize activities, allocate resources and monitor progress.
• Client‑oriented mindset: build productive partnerships, understand stakeholder needs and communicate progress effectively.
